The 190 km hop from Bhopal to Ujjain is one of the easiest pilgrim runs in Madhya Pradesh: a 3.5-hour taxi ride via Sehore and Dewas, a 3-4 hour train to Ujjain Junction, or a cheap state bus. By Train — Frequent and Cheap

Bhopal Junction and Rani Kamlapati station both send trains toward Ujjain through the day. The section is served by long-distance expresses running toward Ratlam and Rajasthan — the Bhopal-Jodhpur Express family among them — plus passenger services, so you can usually find a departure within a couple of hours. By Road — Sehore, Ashta, Dewas, Then NH-52

The drive follows the four-lane Bhopal-Indore highway and peels off at Dewas onto NH-52 for Ujjain. Landmarks in order:

By Bus — the Budget Route

MP transport and private operators run frequent services from Bhopal (Halalpur and ISBT stands) to Ujjain's Nanakheda bus stand, taking 4-5 hours with stops. It is the cheapest option but drops you 4 km from the temple, so budget for an auto or e-rickshaw at the end. Timing Tips for Bhopal Visitors

Because Bhopal is close enough for repeat visits, timing matters more than mode. Weekday mornings outside festival season mean a 30-45 minute general darshan queue; Mondays in Shravan (July-August) can stretch past three hours, and Mahashivratri week fills every hotel in town. If your dates fall in those windows, leave Bhopal earlier than usual — a 4:30 AM start puts you in the queue before the tour buses arrive — and book your return taxi with waiting time rather than hoping to find one at the temple gates.

Monsoon deserves a mention: the Bhopal-Dewas stretch is four-laned and drains well, but expect 30-45 extra minutes in heavy July-August rain. Winter fog is rare on this route, unlike the northern highways. One more local tip — phones and leather items are not permitted in the Mahakaleshwar sanctum area, and the lanes around Mahakal Lok are pedestrian-only for the final stretch, so your driver drops you at the nearest permitted point and waits at a fixed spot you can find again. It is exactly the kind of small friction a local driver removes.
