The Big Five
- Simhastha Kumbh Mela — every 12 years (next: 2028). The world's largest religious gathering on the Kshipra banks.
- Mahashivratri — February/March. Mahakaleshwar's biggest annual night; darshan queues run 6-10 hours, the temple stays open 44 hours straight.
- Shravan Sawari — July/August Mondays. Baba Mahakal rides through the city in royal processions; each of the 6-7 sawaris draws 2-5 lakh devotees.
- Hari Har Milan — Kartik month (November). The midnight meeting of Vishnu (Hari) and Shiva (Har), when Mahakal hands over the world's charge for four months.
- Nag Panchami — July/August. The only 24 hours of the year when Nagchandreshwar Temple opens.
