Ujjain Junction sits on the Delhi-Indore corridor, so direct trains exist and sell out early around Shravan month and Mahashivratri. The workhorse is the Malwa SF Express (12920) from Hazrat Nizamuddin — board in the evening, wake up in Malwa. Trains on the Nizamuddin-Indore Intercity route also stop at Ujjain. A rough picture:

By Air — Delhi to Indore (IDR), Then 55 km by Road

Ujjain has no commercial airport. The gateway is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, Indore (IATA: IDR), with multiple daily nonstops from Delhi taking about 1 hour 20 minutes. By Road — 790 km via NH-44 and the Malwa Plateau

Drivers leave Delhi on NH-44 through Agra and Gwalior, then continue via Shivpuri, Guna and Maksi into Ujjain. The road surface is good for most of the run, but 13-15 hours behind the wheel is punishing in one go. Sensible overnight halts are Gwalior (fort visit) or Guna. When Should Delhi Travellers Come?

October to March is the comfortable window — Malwa winters are mild, and darshan queues move quickly on weekdays. The heavy seasons are different: Shravan month (July-August) brings the famous Sawari processions and Monday crowds that triple wait times, while Mahashivratri in February-March packs the town for a week. If you are coming for those, book trains the day reservations open and confirm your Ujjain hotel and taxi at least a week ahead. Summer (April-June) is hot but quiet — early-morning darshan and an AC car make it entirely manageable.

Two practical notes for first-timers from Delhi. First, mobile phones and leather items are not allowed inside the Mahakaleshwar sanctum area, so use the temple lockers or leave valuables with your driver. Second, the old city's lanes around Mahakal Lok are pedestrianised for several hundred metres — your taxi drops you at the nearest permitted point, and e-rickshaws shuttle the last stretch.
