There are three practical ways to reach Ujjain from Delhi: an overnight train such as the Malwa SF Express to Ujjain Junction, a 1 hr 20 min flight to Indore followed by a 55 km taxi, or a long 790 km drive down NH-44. For most pilgrims, the overnight train wins on cost and the flight wins on time — and we handle your pickup at either end.
| Mode | Duration | Approx Cost (as of 2026) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train (SL / 3A) | 12-14 hrs | ₹400-₹1,600 per person | Budget travellers, overnight journey |
| Flight to Indore + taxi | 4-5 hrs door to door | ₹3,500-₹8,000 airfare + taxi | Short trips, elderly pilgrims |
| Self-drive / hired car | 13-15 hrs | Fuel + tolls, roughly ₹7,000-₹10,000 | Families making stopovers |
| Volvo / sleeper bus | 14-16 hrs | ₹1,200-₹2,500 per person | Flexible dates, no train ticket |
Fares are indicative bands as of 2026. Train and airline prices change daily — verify on IRCTC or the airline's site before booking.
Ujjain Junction sits on the Delhi-Indore corridor, so direct trains exist and sell out early around Shravan month and Mahashivratri. The workhorse is the Malwa SF Express (12920) from Hazrat Nizamuddin — board in the evening, wake up in Malwa. Trains on the Nizamuddin-Indore Intercity route also stop at Ujjain. A rough picture:
| Train | From | Approx Journey Time |
|---|---|---|
| Malwa SF Express (12920) | Hazrat Nizamuddin | ~12-13 hrs to Ujjain Jn |
| Nizamuddin-Indore expresses (via Ujjain) | Hazrat Nizamuddin | ~12-14 hrs |
| Delhi-Indore trains (alight Indore, taxi 55 km) | New Delhi / NZM | ~13 hrs + 1.5 hr taxi |
Timetables shift with seasonal changes — always confirm the current schedule on IRCTC. If your train terminates at Indore instead of Ujjain, tell us the arrival time and a driver will be waiting at the station exit; see our Indore to Ujjain taxi page for that leg.
Ujjain has no commercial airport. The gateway is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, Indore (IATA: IDR), with multiple daily nonstops from Delhi taking about 1 hour 20 minutes. IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express all fly this sector; airport details are on the Airports Authority of India site. From the airport it is a straight 55 km run on NH-52 via Sanwer — our sedans and SUVs do it in around 1.5 hours, dropping you at your hotel or directly near the Mahakaleshwar Temple gates. Drivers leave Delhi on NH-44 through Agra and Gwalior, then continue via Shivpuri, Guna and Maksi into Ujjain. The road surface is good for most of the run, but 13-15 hours behind the wheel is punishing in one go. Sensible overnight halts are Gwalior (fort visit) or Guna. If you would rather not drive, we arrange outstation cars with experienced highway drivers — ask on WhatsApp for a Delhi pickup quote.
Reaching Ujjain is half the trip. Mahakaleshwar darshan queues, the 4 AM Bhasma Aarti, Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat all sit within a compact old city where parking and lanes confuse first-timers. Our local drivers handle the sequencing so you cover more in less time. Popular add-ons for Delhi visitors:
October to March is the comfortable window — Malwa winters are mild, and darshan queues move quickly on weekdays. The heavy seasons are different: Shravan month (July-August) brings the famous Sawari processions and Monday crowds that triple wait times, while Mahashivratri in February-March packs the town for a week. If you are coming for those, book trains the day reservations open and confirm your Ujjain hotel and taxi at least a week ahead. Summer (April-June) is hot but quiet — early-morning darshan and an AC car make it entirely manageable.
Two practical notes for first-timers from Delhi. First, mobile phones and leather items are not allowed inside the Mahakaleshwar sanctum area, so use the temple lockers or leave valuables with your driver. Second, the old city's lanes around Mahakal Lok are pedestrianised for several hundred metres — your taxi drops you at the nearest permitted point, and e-rickshaws shuttle the last stretch. Our drivers know the current drop rules, which change during festivals, so you spend your energy on darshan rather than logistics.
Fly Delhi-Indore (~1 hr 20 min) and take our taxi for the last 55 km. Door to door it is about 4-5 hours, versus 12+ by train.
The Malwa SF Express (12920) from Nizamuddin is the most convenient overnight option to Ujjain Junction. Confirm the current timetable on IRCTC — schedules do change.
Sedans run in the ₹1,400-₹1,700 band one-way as of 2026, SUVs a little more. Fixed quote before pickup, toll included.
Only if you enjoy long drives or want stopovers at Agra and Gwalior. Straight through, it is 13-15 hours — the overnight train covers the same ground while you sleep.
Yes. Share your train number on WhatsApp and the driver tracks the running status, waiting at the station exit even if the train is late.
