From Mumbai you can reach Ujjain three ways: board an overnight train like the Avantika Express toward Indore, fly Mumbai-Indore in about 1.5 hours and cover the last 55 km by taxi, or drive 655 km up NH-52 through Nashik and Dhule. The flight-plus-taxi combination gets you from your Mumbai door to the Mahakaleshwar Temple in roughly five hours — and we handle the taxi half.

By Train — Avantika Express and Friends

The Mumbai-Malwa rail corridor runs via Vadodara and Ratlam, and the best-known name on it is the Avantika Express (12961) from Mumbai Central to Indore — the train is literally named after Ujjain's ancient name, Avantika. Depending on the day you can also use other Mumbai-Indore expresses or any Ratlam-bound train, finishing with a short taxi leg:

By Air — Mumbai to Indore (IDR), Then Taxi

By Road — NH-52 via Nashik and Dhule

Drivers take the old Agra-Bombay alignment: Mumbai → Nashik → Dhule → Sendhwa → Indore bypass → Ujjain, almost entirely on NH-52/NH-60. Budget 12-13 hours of driving plus stops. The Kasara and Bijasan ghat sections demand daylight caution in monsoon. A popular variation is breaking the trip at Shirdi (via Nashik) and turning it into a two-shrine pilgrimage. Planning Notes for Mumbai Travellers

Book trains early: the Mumbai-Malwa corridor sells out weeks ahead for Shravan Mondays (July-August) and Mahashivratri, when lakhs converge on Ujjain. Tatkal is a gamble in those windows; flights hold availability longer but climb in price, so a fortnight's notice keeps the fare band reasonable. October to March is the pleasant season with short queues; summer is hot but uncrowded and works fine with early-morning darshan and an AC car.

If your return is a night train from Indore or an evening flight, keep a two-hour buffer on the Ujjain-Indore leg — the 55 km run is quick, but festival-day traffic near Sanwer can crawl. Also note two sanctum rules that catch first-timers: mobile phones and leather items are not allowed inside the Mahakaleshwar sanctum area (lockers are available, or leave things with your driver), and the lanes around Mahakal Lok are pedestrian-only for the last stretch, with e-rickshaws shuttling the gap.
