Season and Booking Notes from Pune

The comfortable travel window is October to March — mild Malwa weather and manageable darshan queues. The crush periods are Shravan month (July-August), especially Mondays when the Sawari processions draw enormous crowds, and Mahashivratri week. Trains on the Pune-Indore corridor sell out well ahead of those dates, so reserve the day booking opens or fall back on flights, which hold seats longer at a higher band. Monsoon travellers driving via Dhule should plan the Bijasan ghat stretch for daylight.

Returning the same weekend? Keep buffers honest: two hours between leaving Ujjain and any Indore departure covers festival traffic near Sanwer. At the temple itself, phones and leather items are not allowed in the Mahakaleshwar sanctum area — use the lockers or leave valuables in the car — and the final approach through Mahakal Lok is pedestrian-only, with e-rickshaws covering the gap from the taxi drop point.
