Ujjain sightseeing by car fits comfortably into an 8-hour day if you follow one loop: Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga at dawn, the walkable old-city temples, then south to Vedh Shala and Chintaman Ganesh, and finally north through Mangalnath to Kal Bhairav, with Kaliadeh Palace as an add-on. That covers ten core stops in roughly 40–45 km of driving without doubling back, with Siddhavat and the palace as optional extras.
Most one-day Ujjain itineraries online list the same temples but in an order that criss-crosses the city twice, and none of them tell you where the car actually waits at each stop. This guide fixes both. It gives a clock-timed route built around the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga queue, the parking point and walking distance at every temple, and a realistic view of what to drop if the morning runs late. It is written for people who want a car and driver for the day; if that is you, you can hire a taxi in Ujjain on an 8-hour package and hand this route to your driver. If you only have a morning, our shorter half-day temple circuit covers the six essentials.
All times and distances below are approximate as of 2026 and assume a normal weekday. Temple timings, parking arrangements and traffic rules in Ujjain change around festivals, so confirm locally on the day.
Ujjain’s sights fall into three clusters, and the whole trick of a one-day car tour is to visit each cluster once.
An 8-hour package, usually sold with a kilometre allowance of around 80 km, is enough for all three clusters. The core route below uses roughly 40–45 km, or about 55–60 km with the optional northern add-ons, which leaves a buffer for a hotel pickup or a detour.
This timetable starts at 6:00 AM so that the longest queue of the day is behind you first. If you attended the early morning aarti, start the clock from the moment you exit the temple instead.
| Time | Stop | From previous stop | Time on site | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6:00–7:45 AM | Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga | Hotel pickup; car parks at Mahakal Lok side | 1–2 hr | Queue length decides everything; general entry through Mahakal Lok |
| 7:45–8:00 AM | Bade Ganesh ka Mandir | Next to Mahakal, walk | 10–15 min | Large Ganesh idol, a two-minute walk from the temple exit |
| 8:00–8:25 AM | Harsiddhi Temple | ~700 m, walk | 20–25 min | Shakti Peeth with the tall lamp pillars |
| 8:25–9:00 AM | Ram Ghat + breakfast | ~500 m, walk | 30–35 min | Riverfront; poha and tea stalls nearby |
| 9:10–9:30 AM | Vedh Shala (Jantar Mantar) | ~2 km, car | 20 min | Small ticketed monument; best before the midday sun |
| 9:45–10:15 AM | Chintaman Ganesh Temple | ~6–7 km, car | 25–30 min | Across the Shipra; open parking in front |
| 10:40–11:05 AM | Sandipani Ashram | ~9–10 km, car | 25 min | Where Krishna, Balarama and Sudama studied, according to tradition |
| 11:10–11:35 AM | Mangalnath Temple | ~1.5 km, car | 25 min | Riverside temple; Tuesdays are busy with Mangal dosh puja |
| 11:45 AM–12:20 PM | Gadkalika Temple + Bhartrihari Caves | ~3 km, car | 35 min | The two sit close together on the same road |
| 12:30–1:05 PM | Kal Bhairav Temple | ~3 km, car | 30–35 min | Known for the liquor offering; the queue moves quickly |
| 1:05–1:40 PM | Lunch | — | 35 min | Ask the driver; dhabas on the Bhairavgarh side or back towards Freeganj |
| 1:40–2:00 PM | Return to hotel or station | ~6–8 km | — | Eight hours from pickup |
| Optional +1.5–2 hr | Siddhavat, then Kaliadeh Palace | ~3 km, then ~8–10 km | 20 + 30 min | Sacred banyan at Bhairavgarh; island palace on the Shipra, the northernmost stop |
The core loop fits eight hours on a normal weekday, with ten stops. If you want Siddhavat and Kaliadeh Palace too, book a 10-hour day or agree extra hours with the driver in advance. If the Mahakal queue runs past two hours, cut Sandipani Ashram before anything else and keep Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath, which most pilgrims consider essential.
If you arrive in Ujjain late in the morning, reverse the loop: start with Kaliadeh Palace and the northern arc around 11 AM, do Vedh Shala and Chintaman Ganesh in mid-afternoon, and end in the Mahakal cluster from about 5 PM. That puts you at Ram Ghat for the evening aarti and at Mahakal Lok as the lights come on, which many visitors prefer to a dawn start.
Parking is the part no itinerary mentions, and it is the part that costs the most time. The table shows where your driver will usually stop and how far you walk.
| Stop | Where the car usually waits | Walk to entrance | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mahakaleshwar, Bade Ganesh, Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat | Organised parking on the Mahakal Lok side; the car stays here for the whole cluster | 10–20 min to the temple, then all on foot | No private cars in the temple lanes; keep the parking slip |
| Vedh Shala | Roadside space outside the observatory | 1–2 min | Narrow road; driver may circle rather than wait |
| Chintaman Ganesh | Open parking ground in front of the temple | 2–3 min | Very busy on Wednesdays and on Ganesh Chaturthi |
| Sandipani Ashram | Roadside in front of the ashram | 1 min | Few shade spots in summer |
| Mangalnath | Parking area near the approach steps | 3–5 min, some steps | Tuesday crowds; puja touts at the gate |
| Gadkalika + Bhartrihari Caves | Roadside between the two | 2–4 min each | The caves have low ceilings and uneven floors |
| Kal Bhairav | Lot before the market lane | 3–5 min through stalls | Shops selling offerings will stop you; buy only what you want |
| Siddhavat | Lane near the ghat | 2–3 min | Narrow approach; larger vehicles may stop further back |
| Kaliadeh Palace | Open ground at the site | 2–5 min | Limited facilities; carry water |
For the full picture on parking lots, charges and the last kilometre to Mahakaleshwar, see our Mahakal Mandir parking guide. Charges at organised lots are small and change from time to time; the driver usually pays and adds them to your final bill if they are not included.
A full day means twelve or more getting-in-and-out moments, some narrow lanes and a lot of heat. Match the car to your group, not just to the headcount.
| Vehicle type | Comfortable for | Good at | Less good at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hatchback | 2–3 adults | Narrow lanes near Siddhavat and Kal Bhairav, quick parking | Boot space if you are checking out of a hotel the same day |
| Sedan (Dzire, Etios class) | 3–4 adults | The best all-round choice; cooler and quieter on longer legs | Five adults is a squeeze |
| MUV (Ertiga class) | 5–6 people | Families with children and seniors | Slightly slower to park in tight spots |
| SUV (Innova Crysta class) | 6–7 people | Comfort for elders, luggage plus passengers | Stops a little further back at Siddhavat and Vedh Shala |
| Tempo Traveller | 9–12 people | Extended families and groups | Directed to bus parking at Mahakal Lok; longer walks |

You can see ten main temples and monuments in about 8 hours, or twelve in about 10 hours, by car if you visit Mahakaleshwar first and then drive one loop south and north without doubling back.
Mahakaleshwar at dawn, then walk to Bade Ganesh, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat. Drive to Vedh Shala and Chintaman Ganesh, then north to Sandipani Ashram, Mangalnath, Gadkalika, Bhartrihari Caves, Kal Bhairav, Siddhavat and Kaliadeh Palace.
Private cars use the organised parking on the Mahakal Lok side and other designated lots. The temple lanes are closed to private vehicles, so you walk the last stretch or take an e-rickshaw.
The core loop in this guide uses roughly 40 to 45 km (about 55 to 60 km with Siddhavat and Kaliadeh Palace), well inside a typical 8-hour, 80 km local taxi package, leaving room for hotel pickup and a detour.
Siddhavat and Kaliadeh Palace are already optional in an 8-hour day; after that drop Sandipani Ashram, then Vedh Shala. Keep Mahakaleshwar, Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath, which most pilgrims treat as essential.
