There is no direct Ujjain to Omkareshwar train as of 30 September 2026. Omkareshwar Road railway station sits on a metre-gauge stretch that has had no passenger service since 30 January 2023 because of broad-gauge conversion. Rail users take a train from Ujjain to Indore and finish by road; most pilgrims go straight by cab or bus, about 135-140 km.
That surprises many travellers, because booking apps and route sites still show "Ujjain to Omkareshwar Rd" results. This guide explains why, shows you exactly what has and has not been converted on the line, and lays out the practical way to get from Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga to Omkareshwar Temple in one day. If you would rather skip the transfers altogether, you can book an Ujjain to Omkareshwar taxi for a door-to-door trip.
No. Ujjain Junction railway station (code UJN) is on the broad-gauge network, while Omkareshwar Road (code OM) is a small station on the old metre-gauge Akola-Ratlam line. The two networks do not connect for passenger trains, so no single train can run between them. On top of that, the metre-gauge passenger that used to serve Omkareshwar Road from the Mhow side, the Dr. Ambedkar Nagar-Sanawad Passenger, was withdrawn on 30 January 2023 so the track could be converted to broad gauge.
Timetable data we checked on 30 September 2026 listed no direct trains from Ujjain Junction, Khandwa or Sanawad to Omkareshwar Road. For journeys from Ujjain, the only rail suggestion was to change at Indore. We also found no notice from Indian Railways, the Western Railway zone or the government press office announcing any passenger service to Omkareshwar Road. Treat this as a snapshot, not a promise: always confirm on NTES (National Train Enquiry System) before you travel.
| Section | Gauge / status | Passenger service | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ujjain Junction to Indore Junction | Broad gauge, fully operational | Several trains a day; check timings and fares on NTES or IRCTC at booking | Check NTES/IRCTC |
| Dr. Ambedkar Nagar (Mhow) to Omkareshwar Road, about 64 km | Metre gauge, not yet converted; the Centre gave final tree-felling approval in August 2026, with felling due to start after the monsoon | None since 30 January 2023 | Wikipedia; Daily Excelsior (PTI), 11 Aug 2026 |
| Omkareshwar Road to Sanawad, about 5.4 km | Broad-gauge track laid; speed trial and safety (CRS) inspection reported in July 2024 | No passenger service to Omkareshwar Road announced at the time of writing | Agniban and Patrika, July 2024 |
| Sanawad to Khandwa | Broad gauge, converted | Local passenger/MEMU service running since 12 March 2024; it ends at Sanawad | Wikipedia (Khandwa-Sanawad Special); timetable data, July 2026 |
| Whole Ratlam-Mhow-Khandwa conversion | In progress | Reported completion target 2030 for the 156 km Mhow-Khandwa line (an earlier November 2025 report gave 31 March 2028) | Daily Excelsior (PTI), 11 Aug 2026; Wikipedia (Akola-Ratlam line) |
Search "Ujjain to Omkareshwar train" and you will see pages promising timetables, fares and even a count of trains. These pages are generated automatically from route databases. Some combine a train to Indore with a road leg and label the whole trip as "train". Others still carry the old metre-gauge station in their database even though no train stops there. Data quality varies too: one route listing we opened on 30 September 2026 showed zero trains next to a distance of -1 km and a departure time of 25:00.
An automated listing is not proof that a train runs. The official check takes two minutes.
Omkareshwar Road railway station is in Mortakka, a small town in Khandwa district. It belongs to the Ratlam railway division of the Western Railway zone and sits on the Akola-Ratlam line, the long metre-gauge route that once linked Ratlam, Mhow, Omkareshwar and Khandwa. Despite its name, the station is not at the temple. Omkareshwar Temple stands on an island in the Narmada River, and the road from the station to the temple ghats covers roughly 10-17 km depending on which station building you start from and the road you take. Distances differ between listings, and reports say the new broad-gauge station has been built closer to the Sanawad side, so confirm locally before you plan to walk or take an auto.
If a passenger service does resume, you will still need a road transfer from Mortakka. Do not count on finding an auto or shared jeep at a small station at odd hours. The final stretch to the temple is often on foot across a bridge over the Narmada River. For elderly travellers or anyone carrying luggage, a vehicle that drops you close to the bridge parking is far easier than a station change.
The conversion is part of a long-running Indian Railways plan to bring the whole Ratlam-Mhow-Khandwa corridor to broad gauge. It is being done in pieces, which is why you will read conflicting news about Omkareshwar trains. Here is where each piece stands, with the date of each report.
The southern end moved first. Between Khandwa Junction railway station and Sanawad railway station the line was converted, and the Khandwa-Sanawad Special began broad-gauge runs on 12 March 2024. Timetable data from July 2026 shows the service now running as a MEMU that still terminates at Sanawad. It does not continue to Omkareshwar Road.
The short extension from Sanawad to Omkareshwar Road, about 5.4 km, followed. Free Press Journal reported in August 2023 that work was underway and that the next stretch north of Omkareshwar had been put out to tender. Hindi dailies Agniban and Patrika reported a diesel speed trial and a safety commissioner's inspection on this section in July 2024, with the MEMU to be extended to Omkareshwar Road after electrification. As of 30 September 2026 we found no announcement that passenger trains have started calling there, so treat Omkareshwar Road as unserved until NTES shows otherwise.
The hardest part is the roughly 64 km between Dr. Ambedkar Nagar (Mhow) and Omkareshwar Road, which runs through heavily forested country. In August 2023 the Western Railway general manager said the Mhow-Sanawad conversion would be finished by June 2026; that date has passed with the section still not converted. In February 2026 Business Standard reported that the railways had asked the Centre for final approval for the Mhow-Khandwa project, which may require felling more than 120,000 trees, and that the work would take about two years once cleared. On 11 August 2026 Daily Excelsior, carrying a PTI report, said the Centre had given final approval, with conditions, to fell about 1.40 lakh trees for the project. The condition is a Green Railway Corridor Management Plan, and felling was due to start after the monsoon. The same report gives 2030 as the completion target for the 156 km Mhow-Khandwa broad-gauge line, replacing the earlier 31 March 2028 figure. That is a target, not a timetable. Until this section opens, no train from Indore or Ujjain can reach Omkareshwar Road.
If you are already travelling by rail, for example arriving at Ujjain on a long-distance train, the train can still carry you part of the way. Ujjain to Indore is a busy broad-gauge route with several trains a day. From Indore you continue to Omkareshwar by road.
The train-plus-road plan has two transfers, and each one adds waiting time. Route aggregators estimate around three and a half hours of moving time for train plus taxi via Indore, before any wait at the station or the taxi stand. If you want Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in the morning and Omkareshwar Temple the same afternoon, a direct road trip is simpler: you leave the moment darshan ends rather than waiting for a train slot. Rail makes most sense if you are already in Indore or you are a solo traveller on a tight budget with flexible timing. Our Mahakaleshwar to Omkareshwar same-day guide covers planning both darshans in one day.
The three realistic options compare like this, door to door. Times are approximate ranges, and fares change, so check them when you book. We do not quote taxi fares here because rates change; see the current per-km fares on our taxi page and confirm the final fare at booking. For every road route side by side, see our Ujjain to Omkareshwar route options guide.
| Option | Legs / transfers | Door-to-door time (approx.) | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Train Ujjain to Indore + cab or bus to Omkareshwar | 2 legs, 1-2 transfers (hotel to station, station to road vehicle) | Around 3.5 hours of moving time, plus waits | Rail fare + road fare; check NTES/IRCTC and the operator at booking | Travellers already on a rail itinerary, or solo travellers staying in Indore |
| Direct taxi, Ujjain to Omkareshwar | 1 leg, no transfers; hotel pickup | Roughly 2.5-3.5 hours for about 135-140 km, depending on traffic and stops | Per-km fare by vehicle; see the live taxi page for current rates | Families, elderly pilgrims, anyone with luggage or a fixed darshan slot |
| Bus, Ujjain to Omkareshwar | 1-2 legs depending on the service; walk from bus stand | Usually longer than a cab; depends on stops and connections | Lowest per person; check fares at the bus stand or booking app | Solo and budget travellers with flexible timing |

The return has the same problem in reverse. With no passenger trains at Omkareshwar Road, an Omkareshwar to Ujjain train trip means travelling by road to Indore and taking a train from Indore Junction to Ujjain Junction. That works if you plan to stay the night in Indore or catch an onward train from there. If you want to be back in Ujjain the same evening, a direct cab or bus is usually quicker. Our Omkareshwar to Ujjain return route guide covers the return journey in detail.
If you are coming from the Khandwa side rather than Ujjain, the broad-gauge service between Khandwa Junction and Sanawad may help you get closer, but it still stops short of Omkareshwar Road at the time of writing. Check NTES for the day's running before relying on it.
No. As of 30 September 2026 there is no direct passenger train from Ujjain Junction to Omkareshwar Road. The metre-gauge service to Omkareshwar Road has been suspended since 30 January 2023 for broad-gauge conversion. Take a train to Indore and continue by road, or go directly by cab or bus.
Omkareshwar Road (code OM) at Mortakka is the nearest station, but it has no passenger trains at the time of writing. The nearest station with regular trains from Ujjain is Indore Junction, from where you continue by road.
Roughly 10-17 km by road, depending on which station building you start from and the route. Listings differ and the new broad-gauge station is reportedly closer to Sanawad, so confirm locally.
A direct taxi is usually fastest because there are no transfers. The road trip is about 135-140 km and takes roughly 2.5-3.5 hours depending on traffic and stops.
No date has been announced. The Centre gave final tree-felling approval for the Mhow-Khandwa conversion in August 2026, and the reported completion target is 2030. Check NTES for the latest status.
It is possible by train to Indore and a bus onward, but the two transfers make the day long and tight. A direct cab or bus from Ujjain is simpler if you want both darshans on the same day.
