Ujjain to Pashupatinath Mandsaur: Distance and Cab

UT By Ujjain Tour & Travel Editorial· Updated 2026-10-07·7 min read

Key takeaways

The Ujjain to Pashupatinath Mandsaur distance is about 150 km by road, roughly a 3-hour drive by car. The 123 km figure you often see, including on the Mandsaur district website, is close to the straight-line distance. Pashupatinath Temple, Mandsaur stands on the Shivna River and is open 6 AM to 8 PM every day.

A same-day darshan from Ujjain is realistic if you leave early. Below we explain where the two distance figures come from, how to get there by cab or train, what to know about the Ashtamukhi idol, a workable day plan, and what the trip costs at the per-km rates published on our taxi page.

Ujjain to Pashupatinath Mandsaur distance: the short answer

Plan on about 150 km each way between Ujjain and Mandsaur by road. A distance calculator puts the driving route at 150.2 km and the drive at around 3 hours; the temple itself is about 3 km from Mandsaur city centre, via Pashupatinath Mandir Road, so the last stretch adds only a few minutes. A return trip is therefore around 300 km and 6 hours on the road, before stops.

For a cab, the simplest option is a sedan for up to four people or an Ertiga or Innova for six. You can book any of these through our Ujjain taxi service, which lists the per-km rate for every car; the cost section further down works through the numbers.

Why you see both 123 km and 150 km

The Mandsaur district website says Ujjain is "about 123 kilometers away". The same calculator that gives 150.2 km for the drive gives 123.6 km as the straight-line (as-the-crow-flies) distance. The official figure therefore matches the straight line, not the road. Roads curve around towns, rivers and junctions, so the distance your cab actually covers is longer. For fuel, time and fare planning, use the road figure.

The practical rule: if a source gives a single number with no explanation, assume 150 km by road and about 3 hours.

Route and drive time from Ujjain

By cab

A private cab is the most flexible way to do this trip, because you choose the start time and can combine it with other stops. At about 150 km and 3 hours each way, an early start puts you at the temple in the morning, when the 6 AM to 8 PM timings leave the whole day available. Ask your driver which road they intend to take and allow extra time for halts, traffic in towns and any road work; the 3-hour figure is a calculator estimate, not a guarantee.

Our guides to the Ujjain to Salkanpur cab trip and the Ujjain to Nalkheda distance cover two other temple trips that many Ujjain visitors combine with Mahakaleshwar Temple darshan.

By train

Mandsaur railway station is about 3-5 km from the temple, according to the district website, and Ratlam Junction, about 84 km from Mandsaur, is a major railway hub. The district website lists two trains from Indore: the 14802 Indore-Jodhpur Express, departing Indore at 4:30 AM and reaching Mandsaur at 7:45 AM, and the 19315 Veer Bhumi Express, departing 5:55 PM and arriving 11:16 PM. We have not verified whether, or when, these trains stop at Ujjain, so check current timings and stops on NTES or IRCTC before you plan around them. Timetables change, so treat the Indore times as a starting point.

Flying in from elsewhere

If you are coming from outside Madhya Pradesh, Indore and Udaipur are the reference airports. The district website gives Udaipur airport as 182 km from Mandsaur by road and Indore airport as 212 km. From either airport, you would then drive or take a train to Mandsaur.

About the Ashtamukhi Pashupatinath temple

The temple is known for its Ashtamukhi Shiva Linga, an eight-faced lingam of dark stone. According to Incredible India, the official tourism portal, the faces represent Bhava, Pashupati, Mahadeva, Ishana, Rudra, Sharva, Ugra and Ashani, and the idol weighs approximately 4,600 kg. The temple stands on the bank of the Shivna River, with entrances on all four sides. You can read the official Incredible India page on Pashupatinath Temple, Mandsaur for more background.

The height question

Sources disagree on the idol's height. Incredible India gives it as nearly 3.5 m. Wikipedia gives 4.5 m (15 ft) and says the linga was found in the Shivna riverbed and later reconsecrated, with the temple dated to the 5th-6th century CE. We cannot reconcile the two figures, so we report both with their sources rather than pick one.

When to go and what to plan around

Incredible India names October to March as the best time to visit Pashupatinath Temple, Mandsaur. Those months also make a 6-hour return drive more comfortable, because you spend less of the day in the heat. Three things shape the day:

Festival days

Wikipedia names Maha Shivaratri as the temple's major festival. Around it, expect slower darshan, heavier traffic in Mandsaur town and less parking near the temple. Leave earlier than the plan below suggests and keep the afternoon free in case the queue runs long.

Weekends

If your dates are flexible, a weekday is usually the safer choice for a shorter wait.

Combining with other temples

If you are planning more than one outstation trip from Ujjain alongside Mahakaleshwar Temple darshan, do the longest one, such as Mandsaur, on a day when you have nothing else booked, and keep shorter trips for the days around it.

A same-day plan from Ujjain

The plan below uses only the two numbers we can source: roughly 3 hours of driving each way and the 6 AM to 8 PM temple timings. Adjust the times to your group.

  1. 6:00 AM, leave Ujjain. An early start avoids the midday heat and gives slack for stops. If you want darshan at Mahakaleshwar Temple too, do it the previous evening or the day after.
  2. Around 9:00-9:30 AM, reach Mandsaur. Three hours of driving plus a short breakfast stop.
  3. Morning, darshan at Pashupatinath. Allow one to two hours, more on weekends and festival days.
  4. Late morning or lunch, leave Mandsaur. Leaving by early afternoon keeps the return drive in daylight.
  5. Afternoon or early evening, back in Ujjain. About 3 hours plus stops.

Can you do it the same day? Yes, comfortably, as long as you start early. If you want to see more of Mandsaur or are travelling with elderly family, an overnight stay in Mandsaur turns it into a relaxed two-day trip.

Cab cost from our published per-km rates

Our taxi page publishes a per-km rate for each vehicle. The table multiplies that rate by about 300 km, the road distance there and back (2 x 150 km). These are estimates from arithmetic, not fixed package prices.

CarSeatsRate per kmEstimate for ~300 km round trip
Maruti Dzire4Rs 9About Rs 2,700
Hyundai Aura4Rs 9About Rs 2,700
Maruti Ertiga6Rs 9About Rs 2,700
Maruti Eeco6Rs 10About Rs 3,000
Chevrolet Tavera9Rs 13About Rs 3,900
Force Toofan14Rs 13About Rs 3,900
Toyota Innova6Rs 14About Rs 4,200
Toyota Innova Crysta6Rs 17About Rs 5,100
Force Traveller14Rs 20About Rs 6,000

What is not included: tolls, driver allowance, any night charges and minimum-km billing are not part of these figures. Confirm each of them when you book, along with whether the fare is for the actual kilometres driven or a fixed minimum. For a group of four, the Dzire, Aura and Ertiga work out the same at Rs 9/km, and the Ertiga adds two seats.

One-way drop or onward travel

If you only need a drop at Mandsaur, for example because you will continue by train from Mandsaur railway station or from Ratlam Junction, about 84 km from Mandsaur, the one-way arithmetic is about 150 km x the rate: roughly Rs 1,350 in a Dzire, Aura or Ertiga, Rs 2,100 in an Innova or Rs 3,000 in a Force Traveller. Some operators bill the driver's return kilometres on one-way trips, so ask before booking whether the fare is one-way or return-km.

Questions to ask before you confirm

Getting these answers in writing, even as a message, avoids most disputes at the end of the trip.
