An Ujjain to Ratlam taxi covers about 103 km by road, roughly a 2-hour drive; by rail the distance is about 96 km. At our published sedan rate of Rs 9/km, the one-way distance works out to roughly Rs 927, before tolls, driver allowance or any return-km billing, which you should confirm when booking.
Whether you are visiting Ratlam or catching a long-distance train at Ratlam Junction, the right car and departure time depend on your group and schedule. This guide gives you the distances, a per-car cost table built from our own rates, the charges a per-km figure leaves out, and an honest comparison with the train.
You can book a Dzire, Ertiga, Innova or larger vehicle for the trip through our Ujjain taxi service, which lists the current per-km rate and seat count for every car in the fleet.
Different tools give slightly different numbers for this hop, depending on what they measure and which road they assume. What each figure means:
| Measure | Distance | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road, main route | 102.6 km | About 2 h 2 min | distancebetween2.com calculator |
| Road, via Badnawar | 109 km | Not given | One route calculator (distancesfrom.com) |
| Rail, Ujjain Junction to Ratlam | 96 km | About 1.5 h | distancebetween2.com calculator |
| Straight line | 78.3 km | - | distancebetween2.com calculator |
For fare planning, use about 103 km. One route calculator shows 109 km via Badnawar, so if your driver takes that road, or road work forces a detour, expect a few extra kilometres on the meter. The 78 km straight-line figure is useful only to explain why the road is longer; no car travels it.
The road time of about 2 hours assumes steady driving. Leaving Ujjain during the morning rush, or arriving in Ratlam town at peak hours, can add time, so build in a margin if you have a fixed appointment or a train to catch.
The table multiplies each car's published per-km rate by 103 km for a one-way estimate, and by 206 km in case the operator bills the return kilometres as well. Neither column is a fixed fare.
| Car | Seats | Rate per km | One way (~103 km) | If return km billed (~206 km) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Dzire | 4 | Rs 9 | About Rs 927 | About Rs 1,854 |
| Hyundai Aura | 4 | Rs 9 | About Rs 927 | About Rs 1,854 |
| Maruti Ertiga | 6 | Rs 9 | About Rs 927 | About Rs 1,854 |
| Maruti Eeco | 6 | Rs 10 | About Rs 1,030 | About Rs 2,060 |
| Chevrolet Tavera | 9 | Rs 13 | About Rs 1,339 | About Rs 2,678 |
| Force Toofan | 14 | Rs 13 | About Rs 1,339 | About Rs 2,678 |
| Toyota Innova | 6 | Rs 14 | About Rs 1,442 | About Rs 2,884 |
| Toyota Innova Crysta | 6 | Rs 17 | About Rs 1,751 | About Rs 3,502 |
| Force Traveller | 14 | Rs 20 | About Rs 2,060 | About Rs 4,120 |
One to four people: the Maruti Dzire or Hyundai Aura at Rs 9/km is the obvious pick for a city-to-city drop of this length. Split four ways, the one-way estimate is roughly Rs 230 a head.
Five or six people: the Maruti Ertiga carries six at the same Rs 9/km as a sedan, which makes it the best value for a family. The Toyota Innova and Innova Crysta also seat six, at Rs 14 and Rs 17 per km, if you prefer a larger vehicle.
Seven to nine people: the Chevrolet Tavera seats nine at Rs 13/km, so one vehicle replaces two smaller cars.
Ten to fourteen people: the Force Toofan at Rs 13/km or the Force Traveller at Rs 20/km, both listed for 14 seats. For a wedding party or group pilgrimage, the Traveller's one-way estimate of about Rs 2,060 is still low per person.
A per-km rate tells you the cost of the distance, not the whole bill. Before you pay, ask the operator about each of these, because none is included in the table above:
We do not quote tolls or allowances because they change and depend on the booking; confirm them when you book.
Ujjain and Ratlam are both on the railway network, and Ratlam Junction connects to Ujjain as well as to Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Jaipur. So the train is a real alternative. The right choice depends on your group and luggage more than on speed.
| Factor | Taxi | Train |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | About 103 km by road | About 96 km by rail |
| Journey time | About 2 hours, door to door | About 1.5 hours station to station, plus getting to and from each station |
| Departure time | Whenever you choose | Fixed by the timetable; check NTES or IRCTC |
| Luggage and elderly travellers | Easier: pickup at your door, drop at the platform entrance or address | Platform changes and station walks |
| Cost for a group of four | One sedan estimate covers all four | Per-ticket fares; often cheaper for one or two people |
For a solo traveller with light luggage and a train that fits their schedule, the train is often the cheaper choice. For families, groups, early-morning connections or anyone with a lot of luggage, a taxi tends to work out simpler and, split between passengers, competitive. We do not publish train timings here because they change; check the current timetable on NTES or IRCTC.
Ratlam Junction (station code RTM) is a major stop in Western Railway. It is the headquarters of the Ratlam railway division, set up on 15 August 1956, and sits on the New Delhi-Mumbai main line and the Ratlam-Vadodara section, according to Wikipedia's Ratlam Junction railway station page. For some long-distance journeys, driving to Ratlam to board there can save a change of trains.
If that is your plan, a few habits make the drop stress-free:
The same logic works in reverse: if you are arriving at Ratlam Junction and heading to Ujjain for Mahakaleshwar Temple darshan, book the pickup with your train number so the driver can track the arrival.
Ratlam is close enough for a same-day return. Two hours each way leaves most of the day in Ratlam if you start in the morning.
A same-day return covers about 206 km of driving, the same distance used in the right-hand column of the car table. At Rs 9/km that is about Rs 1,854 in a Dzire, Aura or Ertiga, about Rs 2,884 in an Innova and about Rs 4,120 in a Force Traveller. On a return trip, the car waits for you in Ratlam, so ask whether a waiting or daily minimum charge applies on top of the kilometres.
If your day in Ratlam is open-ended, say so when booking; a fixed return time makes the quote easier to compare.
To get an accurate quote, send the operator four details: number of passengers, pickup address in Ujjain, drop address or station in Ratlam, and date and time. Say whether it is one way or a return the same day, and whether you will need the car to wait. With that, you can compare the quote against the arithmetic in the car table and see exactly what has been added.
If you are staying in Ujjain for a few days, the same booking can cover local trips too; see our guides to Ujjain local sightseeing by car and the Ujjain to Salkanpur cab route for other drives across Madhya Pradesh.
About 103 km (a calculator gives 102.6 km). One route calculator shows 109 km via Badnawar. By rail the distance is about 96 km.
Roughly 2 hours of driving (calculator: 2 h 2 min), plus stops and town traffic. Add a margin if you are catching a train.
At our published sedan rate of Rs 9/km, 103 km one way is about Rs 927, or about Rs 1,854 if return kilometres are billed. Tolls, driver allowance and other charges are extra; confirm when booking.
On the move, the train is a little quicker (about 1.5 hours for 96 km by calculator estimate vs about 2 hours by road), but a taxi is door to door. Check current timings on NTES or IRCTC.
For six, the Maruti Ertiga at Rs 9/km is the best value, with the Innova or Innova Crysta for more comfort. For seven, book the 9-seat Chevrolet Tavera at Rs 13/km.
