The Ujjain to Sanwariya Seth distance is roughly 270-290 km by road (our estimate) to the main Sanwaliya Ji temple at Mandaphiya in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh district, about 5.5-7 hours of driving. The straight-line gap is about 223 km. Plan it as an overnight trip: a same-day return means 11-13 hours in the car.
Online answers to this question disagree wildly, and some are not about Sanwariya Seth at all. This guide explains which place you are actually driving to, where the different figures come from, the route most cars take through Mandsaur and Neemuch, and how to turn the drive into a comfortable one- or two-night trip from Ujjain. If you already know your dates, an Ujjain outstation taxi with an overnight halt is the simplest way to do it.
Three things explain figures ranging from about 100 km to well over 300 km:
We worked out the straight-line distance from published coordinates: Ujjain to the Mandaphiya temple is about 223 km, almost exactly the same as Ujjain to Chittorgarh city (about 222-224 km). Route planners give the Ujjain to Chittorgarh distance as about 267-269 km by road. Because the temple lies at a similar straight-line distance but off the main highway, a road figure of roughly 270-290 km is a sensible planning number. Use your map app from your hotel for the final figure.
| Leg | Published figure | Source type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ujjain to Chittorgarh (road) | About 267-269 km | Distance calculators | Straight line about 222 km |
| Ujjain to Neemuch (road) | About 217 km | Route planner | Via Mandsaur |
| Neemuch to Chittorgarh (road) | About 65 km | Route planner | Via Nimbahera |
| Chittorgarh to Mandaphiya temple | About 40 km | Temple guides | Towards the Udaipur side |
| Ujjain to Mandaphiya (straight line) | About 223 km | Our calculation from coordinates | Road distance is longer |
| Ujjain to Sanwariya Seth (road, planning figure) | About 270-290 km | Our estimate | Confirm on a live map before you leave |
Most route planners send cars north-west out of Ujjain towards Jaora, then along the Mandsaur-Neemuch corridor into Rajasthan near Nimbahera, and from there across to Mandaphiya without entering Chittorgarh city. The alternative is to drive into Chittorgarh first and then head out on the Udaipur side to the temple, which is useful if you want to see Chittorgarh Fort on the same trip.
Leave Ujjain by 5-6 AM for darshan before the afternoon. Highway stretches move quickly; town crossings at Jaora, Mandsaur and Neemuch add time, and festival days bring heavy traffic near the temple.
A taxi is the easiest way to reach the temple from Ujjain, but it is not the only one. Public transport works if you are willing to change once.
Public transport saves money for solo travellers and couples, but with two changes and the last-mile leg, the journey usually takes longer than the taxi's 5.5-7 hours. For families, the cost gap narrows quickly once you divide one car between four or five people.
October to February gives the most comfortable weather for a long road trip across the Malwa plateau into Mewar, with cool mornings for an early start. March is still pleasant until Holi and Phooldol, which bring festival crowds. April to June is very hot in this part of Rajasthan, so drive at dawn and rest at midday. During the monsoon the highway is generally open, but rain slows town crossings and makes the temple approach muddy on busy days.
Because the drive is long, the car you choose matters more than on a city tour. A sedan is fine for up to four adults with light bags; families with elderly members or more luggage are better off in an SUV, and groups of eight or more usually take a tempo traveller. Our guide on which car to book for your group explains the trade-offs.
For a long route like this, book your outstation car with the full plan stated up front: pickup time, the Mandsaur stop if you want it, whether you stay overnight, and the return day. That lets the operator quote one clear price instead of adding charges later.
| Trip style | Driving | Who it suits | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same-day return | About 540-580 km, 11-13 hours | Only fit adults with a strong reason to rush | Driver rest break; one darshan slot only |
| One night near the temple or Chittorgarh | About 270-290 km each day | Most families and seniors | Driver night charge and accommodation |
| Two nights with Chittorgarh Fort | Split into shorter days | First-time visitors to the region | Fort entry timings and parking |
| Combined with Mandsaur Pashupatinath | Adds about an hour of stop time | Pilgrims who want two darshans | Mention the stop when booking |
Ask for the quote to state whether tolls, parking, state permit charges for Rajasthan and the driver's night allowance are included. Interstate trips are where unexpected extras usually appear.
Shri Sanwariya Seth is a form of Lord Krishna worshipped by traders and devotees from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, many of whom regard him as a business partner and offer a share of their earnings. The temples lie on the Chittorgarh-Udaipur highway belt around Bhadsora. According to local tradition the idols were found buried at Chapar in the nineteenth century and were installed in the three villages. Read more on the region on Chittorgarh's Wikipedia page.
Published darshan hours differ between sources, with opening times between about 5 AM and 6 AM and closing around 11 PM, so check locally before you set your departure time. The busiest periods are:
If you want an easy darshan, travel on a weekday away from Amavasya and the Ekadashi fair.
Day 1: leave Ujjain at 5:30 AM, breakfast stop near Jaora, Pashupatinath darshan at Mandsaur, reach Mandaphiya by early afternoon, darshan and evening aarti, night stay near the temple or in Nimbahera. Day 2: morning darshan again if you wish, drive back to Ujjain by evening.
Day 1: Ujjain to Chittorgarh via Mandsaur, afternoon at Chittorgarh Fort. Day 2: morning drive to Mandaphiya (about 40 km), darshan, visit Bhadsoda and Chapar, evening back in Chittorgarh or onward. Day 3: return to Ujjain. Travellers continuing to Udaipur can compare our Ujjain to Udaipur distance guide and end the trip there instead.
An estimated 270-290 km by road (our planning figure; confirm on a live map) to the main temple at Mandaphiya in Chittorgarh district, Rajasthan, which is roughly 5.5-7 hours of driving. The straight-line distance is about 223 km.
Those pages are usually about Sanawad, a different town in Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh. Sanwariya Seth is in Rajasthan, about 40 km from Chittorgarh city.
It is possible but tiring: the round trip is about 540-580 km, or 11-13 hours in the car. An overnight stay near the temple, Nimbahera or Chittorgarh is far more comfortable, especially for seniors.
Most route planners go via Jaora, Mandsaur and Neemuch to Nimbahera and then across to Mandaphiya. Going through Chittorgarh city adds a little distance but lets you visit Chittorgarh Fort.
On the monthly bhandar opening (Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi) and the next day's Amavasya mahaprasad, during the three-day Jaljhulni Ekadashi fair, and on festivals such as Janmashtami, Holi and Diwali.
